Week 4 · College football — what the books did to the board while you weren't looking

Every Sunday the books rewrite the college board. You know the premise by now: they hang look-ahead numbers before the weekend, watch everybody play, then quietly take those guesses down and put new ones up. By Monday you're not watching the market move — you're looking at where it landed.

This week it happened in broad daylight, and that's worth saying out loud.

Saturday night, 16 Week 4 games carried a number. Sixteen. By nine o'clock Sunday morning there were 58 — and over the next twelve hours the books moved 158 points across 81 of those spreads and totals. Not overnight. Not at four in the morning. Sunday afternoon, while the NFL was on.

So if you sat down Sunday night and pulled up this week's card, you were already looking at the finished product. You just might not have known most of it got written that afternoon.

Here's where they did the most of it.

The Weekend Re-Rate

Oregon at USC — DraftKings

Saturday nightSunday nightNow
USC −1.5Oregon −2.5Oregon −3

The whole game changed hands. DraftKings had USC laying a point and a half Saturday evening. By Sunday night Oregon was the favorite, and by Monday morning Oregon was laying three.

What the book watched: Oregon beat Portland State 84-0. USC went to Rutgers and won 42-35.

Here's the part I like. The total never went anywhere — 62.5 before the weekend, 63.5 for a few hours Saturday night, 62.5 now. DraftKings has been pricing this game since August 5, twenty-nine separate checks, and it came out of the weekend having completely reversed its opinion on who wins while holding its opinion on how many to within a point. That's a specific thing to believe, and the book is telling you plainly which half it changed its mind about.

Oklahoma at Georgia — DraftKings

Held since Sep 16Sunday nightNow
Total 47.543.543.5

Same shape, opposite halves.

This is the best-sampled game on the board — 39 price checks at DraftKings going back to August 5. The total was 52.5 in August, 47.5 by mid-September, and Sunday night it came down another four to 43.5. It hasn't moved since.

The spread has done nothing. Georgia −13.5 in mid-September, −14 for a day, −13.5 now.

What happened: Oklahoma beat New Mexico 14-6. Georgia went to Arkansas and won 45-17. The book looked at that and said — we still think Georgia wins by about two touchdowns, we just don't think Oklahoma can score.

If that structure feels familiar, it should. I wrote up Syracuse-Pitt last week for exactly the same reason: total gutted, spread untouched. Twice in two weeks, the loudest thing on the board has been a book re-rating an offense without re-rating a matchup.

South Carolina at Alabama — DraftKings

FridaySunday morningNow
Total 48.552.554.5

Eight points up from where it sat in the middle of last week, and the spread finished the weekend exactly where it started.

DraftKings opened this at 46.5 on the 16th. Then 48.5 Friday, 51.5 late Saturday, 52.5 Sunday morning, 54.5 Sunday night.

Both teams played a track meet. Alabama beat Florida State 50-36 — 86 points. South Carolina lost to Mississippi State 41-34 — 75. The book saw 161 points across two games and moved accordingly.

And the side? Alabama −11.5 on the 16th, out to −13.5 Sunday night, back to −11.5 Monday night. A full round trip that ends where it began. (Which is why this game turns up twice in this column — see "They Didn't Touch It" below.)

Missouri at Mississippi State — DraftKings

Sep 16Sunday nightNow
Mississippi State −1.5−6−6.5

Five points — and the part that matters is that it went straight through three.

A game priced as a coin flip last Wednesday is a touchdown now. Mississippi State went to South Carolina and won 41-34. Missouri beat Troy 27-17, and a ten-point home win over Troy is the kind of result that moves a number the wrong way for you. Both games pushed this line in the same direction.

When a line crosses three it isn't the same bet anymore. Three is the single most common losing margin in the sport, and a number that starts on one side of it and finishes on the other has changed what you're actually buying.

Oklahoma State at West Virginia — DraftKings

Sep 16Sunday nightNow
West Virginia +2.5−1.5−1.5

The other one that changed hands. West Virginia was getting two and a half a week ago and is laying a point and a half now.

West Virginia won at Virginia 38-27. Oklahoma State beat Murray State 59-0, which tells you approximately nothing, and the market treated it that way. All four books I track have West Virginia laying between 1.5 and 2 right now, so this isn't one shop with an opinion.

Both Of Them Lost And It Still Moved

Texas A&M at LSU — DraftKings

ThursdaySunday morningNow
LSU −5.5−8.5−8.5

This one gets its own section because on paper nothing should have happened.

LSU went to Ole Miss and lost 32-24. Texas A&M stayed home and lost to Kentucky 31-21. Two ranked teams, two losses, and the line moved three points toward the team that lost on the road.

DraftKings has been on this game since August 5 — 43 checks, more than any other number on this week's board. LSU −3 in August, −5.5 Thursday, −8.5 Sunday morning, −9.5 Sunday night, back to −8.5 Monday. It went straight through seven on the way.

Losing isn't the input. How you lost is. That's the whole lesson here, and it's why I don't put much weight on a result by itself when I'm reading a move.

They Didn't Touch It

Three numbers went all the way through the weekend and came out unchanged. I find these about as interesting as the big moves.

Nebraska at Michigan State — Michigan State +5.5. Sixteen checks since the 16th, a brief visit to 4.5, right back where it started.

UCLA at Maryland — Maryland +1.5. Fifteen checks, one wobble to 2.5, unchanged.

South Carolina at Alabama — the side, as above. Out two points and back again while the total climbed eight.

A whole weekend of football happened in between. The book watched all of it and said: we had that one right.

The Full Board

Everything that moved a point and a half or more since it opened. No commentary, just where the numbers went. Where a game only shows up from Sunday, that's the first time that book posted a price on it.

Reading the move column: for spreads, + means the line moved toward the underdog and  toward the favorite. For totals, + is up and  is down.

How I Measure This

Every number here is one book against itself — its own first print, its own number today. Averaging books that started in different places invents movement that never happened, so I don't do it. Where a game leans on one book, I name the book and tell you how many times I checked it.

I also throw out anything that's one book posting a number and correcting itself overnight with nothing else confirming it. That's not a market moving, that's somebody fixing a typo. Ten of those came out this week.

Saturday is when I tell you what I think of these numbers. Tuesday is just the tape.

Lines are US-book prices captured Monday night and they'll keep moving. Shop your number. Use our FREE Odds Page, or check out our College Football HQ
