Buccaneers Winless No More

Tampa beats Dallas 24-16 on Thursday Night Football.

Rookie QB Jalon Daniels 19 of 25 passing for 189 yards and a touchdown. Bucky Irving rushed 21 times for 165 yards and 2 total touchdowns vs Dallas' 32nd ranked defense.

We played Bucs +8.5 because we felt this team was due for positive regression.

From our You Are What (Your Opponent's) Record Says You Are article this week...

Winless, but Not Necessarily Hopeless

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4). Opponents: 7-5. This may be the most misleading record in the league. The Bucs have lost by 6, 4, 7 and 3, so 0-4 by a combined 20 points, against an above-.500 slate. That's a team close to winning games, not a lost cause.

Not winless anymore

🏈 FOOTBALL FRIDAY: THE EAGLES ARE FALLING APART IN PUBLIC

Start in London, where the market has done something it almost never does without a quarterback going down.

🇬🇧 Eagles at Jaguars: A Four-to-Five Point Move With No QB Injury

Line: Jaguars -7.5 | Total: low 40s, unders trending

This line reopened drastically different and then kept running. Philadelphia opened in the 2.5 range. It's now Jacksonville -7.5.

Fezzik: "This has probably been one of the biggest market moves I've seen without a quarterback injury in years. I thought at six, I said I don't think it goes to six and a half. At six, six and a half I'm — this is crazy. Then I wake up today, I see seven, seven and a half. And I'm like, this is nuts."

What actually happened to this team

EventImpact
Lane Johnson retiresTen-year anchor at right tackle, gone
Cam Jurgens tradedTwo-time All-Pro center, dealt for a 2nd
Saquon Barkley injuredBigsby, the backup, also banged up
DeVonta Smith injuredTop target limited

📊 The Lane Johnson Numbers

Scott ran these on Wednesday's pod and they are the single most important data set on the board:

SplitWin %Offensive EPA/play
With Lane Johnson (since 2013)66%+0.06
Without Lane Johnson38%−0.05

Every offensive metric declines when he's off the field. Now add this: through four weeks, the Eagles have the third-worst offense in the NFL by success rate, and are tied with Miami for third-worst by EPA per play.

Scott: "Any way you measure it analytically, the Eagles offense has been pathetic. Now we take Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens out of it. There's no reason to get behind the Philadelphia Eagles here — other than if you think this number is just too big."

The 2-0 mirage

In Week 3 at Tennessee, Philly under was the move. While the Eagles were still undefeated, because 80% of their offensive production was coming on the final drive of each game — the two-point squeeze against Washington, the last-second score against the Titans. Last week against the Rams, the lead was fabricated by a deep interception and a deep punt return. They went 0-13 on third down.

📡 The Liquidity Tell — and Why It Argues Jaguars

This is the sharpest segment of the week. Fiddle went to the exchanges to ask who the market actually wants to accommodate:

VenueLiquidity on EaglesLiquidity on Jaguars
Kalshi$260,000$100,000
Novig~8x the Jaguars side—
Polymarket~3.5–4x the Jaguars side—

Fiddle: "They're still inviting Eagles money at this price. So if anything, this number's gonna continue to run Jacksonville, which is incredibly surprising to me. I'm wondering, when do I jump in and try to catch the falling knife on the Eagles — or do I just skip all of that because clearly this is an alpha market for Jaguars."

That's the lesson worth keeping: when you can bet two to three times as much on one side, the market isn't done moving. It's advertising.

⭐ WHERE THE PLAYS ARE

🔄 FLIP THE SCRIPT: BEARS AT PACKERS

Line: Bears -2.5 (-3 some shops) | Total: 45.5

The Bears are laying points at Lambeau. Bearman was early on it, got Chicago before the three. Fiddle is on the Bears too. And then Scott asked the question that makes this the best segment of the week: are you buying at the peak?

🏟️ The History Argument

Scott: "It's almost one of those auto-plays I've done every single year — playing against the Bears when they take on the Packers in Lambeau."

GameResult
Jan 5, 2025Bears won 24–22 as 7.5-point dogs
Nov 26, 2015The win before that one
2016–2024 (otherwise)Packers

Packers from +2.5 to +8.5 is an ideal teaser situation. Shop your teaser pricing.

🔄 The Exercise

This is the one to steal. Scott walks it:

StepNumber
Market line, Bears at Green BayBears −2.5
Add back standard home field (1.5)Bears −4 on a neutral
Now move the game to ChicagoBears −5.5 / −6

Scott: "If I told you this game was in Chicago right now and I said Bears minus six — are you rushing to the window to bet the Bears minus six? Or are you saying please give me the Green Bay Packers plus six?"

Bearman's honest answer: "I wouldn't rush to the window to bet the Bears minus six. But I also wouldn't rush to take the Packers. I'd probably play the under in that case."

That's how the exercise is supposed to work. It doesn't always kill the bet — sometimes it just relocates it to the total.

🎲 Trivia: Who Was the Last Bears QB Favored in Green Bay?

AJ asked it on the Football Show. Fezzik nailed it instantly.

Rex Grossman. 2006. Week 1. Bears won 26–0.

Fiddle: "Five years from now, when you ask somebody the last two times, who were the Bears quarterbacks — and it's Tyson Bagent going against Jordan Love, and it's Rex Grossman against Brett Favre — it's like, you're lying to me."

🔥 Fezzik's Bold Take

Fiddle was buying Chicago at −1.5 and is fine with the current price, with a real caveat: "The Packers without Micah Parsons have zero pass rush. That provides time for a well-coached offense to get to its spots. Despite the injuries, Chicago probably still wins in the trenches — probably on both sides of the ball."

Fezzik is on the other end of the spectrum. He called it "the stupidest line I've ever seen" and "Green Bay is gonna kill them." Then came the take:

Fezzik: "That will not be the answer to the trivia question, because the Bears won't be favored when this game kicks off."

Pick'em by kickoff. Write it down.

Raiders at Patriots — NE −3.5, total 45.5

Power ratings on the table:

TeamFezzikFiddle
Raiders−2−2
Patriots+1.5+0.5

Fiddle: "I've gotten very close to saying now is the entry point for the Patriots. Christian Gonzalez, and a great defensive lineman who's questionable — practice reports out of New England today are pretty key. If there's any good news there, I would click New England."

Fezzik: "There's zero chance this line goes to three. Zero." (Translation, per Fezzik: a twenty percent chance.) Then the Alan Boston handicap: "I know the Raiders are a massive upgrade at coaching. The Raiders are never good. Never."

The real argument underneath: by this year's four games only, Kirk Cousins has outplayed Drake Maye. Fiddle's resolution is the right framework — "Kirk Cousins is not a better quarterback than Drake Maye, but we have to downgrade Maye from our preseason priors and upgrade Kirk. It's not like nothing existed prior to this season." A real adjustment down on Maye, a real adjustment up on Cousins in a new scheme, one more year off the Achilles.

AJ's counter: is this a buy-low/sell-high tax? The Raiders just lost their first game; New England just got the biggest win they'll get all year, in Buffalo. Fezzik's answer: "Where's the tax? New England is supposed to win ten games. The Raiders are supposed to win seven." Fiddle's: the tax is on the Raiders, given the week's market movement.

⭐ Colts at Steelers — PIT −2.5, total 44.5 — AJ'S BEST BET

AJ: "Daniel Jones stinks. Daniel Jones is afraid to throw the ball down the field now. And I think this Colts defense is maybe a little overrated. Pittsburgh is really good value as long as you're under three."

Fezzik: "No, they stink. And they were just in London and Pittsburgh has had ten days. This is a Warren Sharp rest-differential edge. If the Steelers can beat the Bengals, they can beat the Colts."

Fiddle was close to buying Steelers early in the week and regrets not doing it — 10 to 12 cents of value gone.

The total is the interesting part. Fiddle liked the over and built a real case:

Then the weather got in the way: gusts to 25 mph, sustained winds north of 10, possible rain. "What I was hopeful for as a clear over is now becoming a murky total market."

AJ's close: a dome team playing outdoors in Pittsburgh. "I'm more solidly on the Steelers here. In fact, that'll be my best bet of the show — Steelers −2.5."

Vikings at Saints — MIN −2.5, total 41.5

Two opposite reads, both well argued.

Fezzik makes it a pick'em. His power ratings: Vikings −1, Saints −2.5. "New Orleans is lousy also." He'll tease the Saints, likes a team that got embarrassed at home on national TV, and is wary of a Vikings defensive score given all the blitzing.

His stat: the Vikings average 4.4 yards per play — last in the NFL. He gave out under 45 on the look-ahead line. And the kicker: "The Saints are a dead-nut over team and this total's 41.5. What does that say about the Vikings being a dead-nut under team?"

Fiddle is a Vikings buy. His market read:

When Pinnacle raised its limits from 5K to 10K on this game, the line moved from −128 out to −137.

"There's still plenty better than −137 in the market. Also, a young quarterback going against this Vikings defense on short rest off a Monday night game. And Justin Jefferson said he expects to play — the coaching staff seemed to be hinting at resting him with the bye next week, and he came right out and said he expects to play."

The blitz note: the Vikings' blitz rate is roughly 12% higher than the highest in NFL history at this point in a season.Fiddle doesn't expect it to hold: "I wonder if they lose a defensive back and have to drop one in pressure later on."

AJ's hesitation: "My first thought on every NFL bet is am I buying low, am I selling high? The Saints could not have looked worse on Monday night. I feel like I'm doing the opposite of selling high."

Broncos at Chargers — DEN −3.5

Fezzik, on how different this would have looked in August: "Chargers gonna win this game."

⭐ 49ers at Seahawks — SEA −3, total 45.5

Probably the game of the day on paper

AJ "I like the Seahawks myself. This is really the first true road game for the 49ers all year — they had the Australia game, they've played three home games. Seattle is probably the toughest place to go play on the road. I like Seattle laying three."

Fiddle: "Agreed. I took the 49ers and I feel like I'm on the wrong side here."

Fezzik's add: Seattle's available at −160 on the moneyline. "Dump those 49ers like a bad habit." Fiddle's option: try to middle it.

Lions at Cardinals — DET −5.5

Fezzik: "Arizona wins outright. Make it 4.6. No play for me with this difference in spread and the value of those key numbers."

A lot of bad teams laying numbers on the road this week.

Ravens at Falcons (SNF) — ATL −3.5, total 43.5

Priced as Lamar Jackson fully out. Friday's news muddied it.

Fezzik: "I think that's noise, not signal. I think Lamar Jackson is out for this game. No play for me at current prices."

💡 The Regret Worth Learning From

Fezzik: "Congratulations to anyone who backed Atlanta early. This is one of those spots I would have grabbed Atlanta early, had it not been for Atlanta playing on Monday night. I didn't want to bet Atlanta before their Monday night game — what if they get hurt? We know what Baltimore's situation is. But of course we then learned the Lamar situation is worse than expected."

The missed structure: "We should have parlayed Atlanta +2 on Monday night to Atlanta +3.5 in this game."

AJ: "Very smart. A very nice correlated parlay."

That's the mechanic — if you're avoiding a price because of injury risk in a game that happens first, parlaying the two games solves the timing problem instead of making you choose.

⭐ Bills at Rams (MNF)

Fiddle has a sizable Rams position and a specific instruction:

Fiddle: "I would still take Rams moneyline. The line's moved through the three, so you're paying about 3.2 in moneyline but 3.5-ish in spread — moneyline offers better value right now. I see −160, −163, −166, −165 on my screens. Those are all buys for me, probably good to about −175."

And then the call: "I think the Rams win this game by double digits. The Bills have been in three different continents. They've been everywhere, man. And the Rams just killed the Eagles in Philly in the world's worst spot. Now they've got eight days and Josh Allen is injured. You've got the very best team against a team that's compromised."

🐘 GEORGIA AT ALABAMA: THE SYSTEM VS. THE ANALYTICS

Line: Alabama −1.5 | Total: 51.5–52.5 | Undefeated vs. undefeated, SEC prime time

Georgia opened as a three-point road favorite. Alabama is now the favorite. That flip is the whole story.

🎯 The System

Bearman: "The system play is when you have two ranked teams, and the lower-ranked team — the one with the higher number next to their name — is favored over the higher-ranked team. That's what we have here with #6 Alabama favored over #2 Georgia."

SampleStraight UpATS
Since 2021 (all)62–2455–30–1

🎪 Why It Works: The Wisdom of the Crowd

Scott's conceptual anchor, and the reason to keep trusting this system even when your own numbers scream the other way:

Scott: "The theory is called The Wisdom of the Crowd. The experiment: you go to a carnival and everyone guesses the weight of an elephant. Or a street fair — how many marbles are in this jar? You get a hundred people guessing. There are guesses so far to the left, guesses so far to the right. But when you average all of the guesses, they come within fractions of the actual weight. How does that make sense? How do you pull a hundred random people and the theory is the ideas of a mass of people are better than the ideas of one sharp individual."

"So when we see trends like this in the betting markets, that's the wisdom of the crowd. The market is taking thousands and thousands of bets and millions and millions of dollars and shaping an opinion. And that opinion is moving toward Alabama."

⏰ The Timing Caveat That Matters Most

Scott: "Maybe when we get to Saturday this changes back, because the sportsbooks will raise their limits, more money floods into the market, and maybe this line moves. If that's the case, I'm going to trust the late move more than I trust the early move here."

Bearman: "At that point you have the wisdom of the crowd for more people than we have."

That's the operating rule for the whole system: it isn't "trust the market," it's trust the deepest, latest, highest-limit version of the market. Saturday's number outranks Friday's.

📊 And Yet: Numbers Say Georgia

MetricGeorgiaAlabama
Points per opportunity (off.)1st—
Points per opportunity allowed (def.)—91st
Havoc created (def.)14th—
Havoc allowed—74th

Bearman: "Georgia has been able to finish drives, and Alabama's defense has not really stopped opponents from finishing drives. On paper analytically — and with my eyeball, since I watch every SEC game — I just have Georgia as the better team here. They match up well except for one big category, and that's defense. Georgia has one, Alabama doesn't. And I say that as someone who has bet Alabama almost every single week."

🌧️ The Weather Flip

This changed between Wednesday and Thursday and it matters for the total.

Scott on Wednesday with Bearman: the hurricane may arrive before the game, leave it wet, wind should be gone, moving a little faster — but we never know.

Fezzik on Thursday: "Weather forecast just changed. Weather's gonna be nice. I wouldn't have said that yesterday. So you're probably going to see money on the over."

A total that was being held down by a storm forecast no longer has that anchor. Expect over money.

🔥 AJ Is on Alabama

AJ: "Massive upgrade based on how well they've played the last few weeks. Alabama could be the best team in the country. And Alabama's played some good football teams. Georgia has played maybe the three worst teams in the SEC so far. So this is really the first test of the season for Georgia — which is why I'm on Alabama."

That's three separate paths to Alabama — the system, the late market, and the schedule-strength argument — against one path to Georgia that happens to be the analytics.
