🏆 BEARMAN CASHES WYNDHAM CLARK AT 30/1
That's his FIFTH outright of the year — "the best year I've had with golf outrights."
Bearman on what impressed him: "He had a five-shot lead that disappeared because he struggled early and Rory caught fire. The whole world is rooting against him — everybody loves Rory, and for whatever reason people don't like Wyndham.
And when it mattered most, he hadn't hit a putt in twenty holes. He went birdie-birdie-birdie to finish. That shows me he has the chutzpah of a champion. I think this is just the beginning — I think we get a couple more majors out of him."
⛳ BIG NEWS: THE PGA TOUR IS BLOWING IT UP
Match Play Returns in 2028
The context: The new commissioner — who came over from the NFL — is completely restructuring the tour. Two tiers: a championship series of ~120 players across 20-some events, plus a second tier with promotion and relegation.
THE NEW FORMAT
Step 1: The season-ending event crowns an event champion AND a season-long points champion. Two trophies. Season over.
Step 2: The top 32 advance to a TWO-WEEK MATCH PLAY EVENT.
- Week one: Eight pods of four, round robin — every player guaranteed three matches
- Week two: Top two from each group = 16 players, standard Sweet 16 bracket down to one
- Losers keep playing — they rank 1 through 16, with secondary/third/fourth brackets like the Maui Invitational, "because every slot is a different price and you want these guys to have four matches"
Why It Fixes the Old WGC Match Play
Bearman: "The problem back in the day was Tiger or Rory or Phil losing in the first round, and then NBC and CBS are stuck with 62 versus 17 and no one's ever heard of these people. They changed to group play to guarantee three matches, and you STILL got no-names making it.
This is the final 32 in the world, going to the final 16. The worst possible winner would be ranked 32nd — which last week was somewhere below Patrick Cantlay and Gary Woodland.
Studies have shown match play gets higher ratings than stroke play. The new commissioner is giving fans what they want."
Scott: "The Ryder Cup is the perfect example. And you know what it means for us, — another event to bet on."
⛳ THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP — EAST LAKE
Tees off tomorrow.
The Course
Bearman: "Typical Donald Ross — pretty straightforward, but tricky elevated greens and difficult rough you don't want to miss the fairway in. They've shrunk the fairways over the years. You need to hit fairways and good irons into the greens.
And because it's the same course every year with mostly the same players, it is course-history friendly."
The Board
| Golfer | Outright | Without Scottie |
|---|---|---|
| Scottie Scheffler | +310 | — |
| Rory McIlroy | +950 | +700 |
| Wyndham Clark | +1800 | +1400 |
| Russell Henley | 30/1 | 22/1 |
| Tom Kim | +4500 | 33/1 |
⭐ RORY McILROY (+950)
The course résumé: Three-time winner here (2016, 2019, 2022) and three FedEx Cup titles, runner-up in 2014. Ranks FIRST at this course in strokes gained tee-to-green, off the green, AND short game among all players. Third on tour in overall strokes gained, second off the tee.
Bearman: "This is a guy who's won back-to-back Masters and kind of just shows up when he WANTS to show up. The old Yankees, the Lakers of the day — when it means something, they show up. He was tied with Wyndham with three holes to go last week and butchered the par five like nothing I've ever seen out of him."
The Scheffler read: "I don't particularly think Scottie's playing the way Scottie should be playing. I know he had hand, foot, and mouth disease after winning the week before — don't know how that would be. And he hasn't played this course great. He won it two years ago, but not as well as Rory has played it. With the odds better and longer on Rory — though I'll take Scottie top five like I do every week."
⭐ WYNDHAM CLARK (+1800) — THE VALUE PLAY
Bearman: "I'm STUNNED you're getting 18/1. It paid 30/1 last week, but that was 30/1 in a 50-person field when Clark ISN'T off a win. He dominated the field other than the front nine Sunday, and then dominated when he needed to. I thought this would be in the fifteens."
The record here: 3rd in 2023, 8th in 2024. "His putter right now is as good as anybody in the game."
🏆 THE NARRATIVE ANGLE: PLAYER OF THE YEAR IS UP FOR GRABS
| Contender | Case |
|---|---|
| Scottie Scheffler | 2 wins including a playoff event, a dozen runner-ups, No. 1 in every statistical category |
| Wyndham Clark | US Open + BMW + CJ Cup |
| Cameron Young | 3 wins |
| Chris Gotterup | 3 wins |
Bearman: "This event could very well decide Player of the Year — and I like Wyndham Clark in that."
The Rest of the Card
Russell Henley — 30/1 outright, +110 top 10: "He has never finished worse than 14th at this event. Runner-up last year, opened with a 61 last year, and he's from Georgia. And quietly — 14 of his 19 events are top-25 finishes."
Tom Kim — +4500 (33/1 without Scottie): The long shot Bearman gave out two weeks ago, right on cue. "He lives right down there."
🏈 32 IN 32: NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
The Market
| Market | Line |
|---|---|
| Win total | 7.5 (over -120) |
| Make playoffs | +198 |
| NFC South | +270 (2nd) |
The "Why Not New Orleans" Case
Bearman: "When SportsLine asked me about the South I said — why not New Orleans? They don't have any fewer holes than the other three knuckleheads in that division.
Tampa should be the best team, and if you asked me to pick today I'd pick them. But do you trust Baker Mayfield? The older receivers? Todd Bowles, who seems to throw three games away every year — how he still has a job amazes me. And you can't trust anything Atlanta is doing at quarterback. The Panthers won it last year and I expect them to take a step back.
Mark my word — the Saints are not making the playoffs unless they win the division."
The injuries: Jordan Tyson (the rookie receiver — "I bet him to win Offensive Rookie of the Year very early and thought I had good value; I picked an NFC South receiver last year and won it with Tetairoa McMillan") is out about a month. Alvin Kamara still banged up; they traded for Zamir White for depth behind Travis Etienne.
Bearman: "I like their coach and I like the Saints' FUTURE a little more than I like their schedule this year."
⭐ THE PLAY: WAIT ON THE DIVISION BET
The Schedule Shape
| Stretch | Games |
|---|---|
| Opening | at Detroit, at Baltimore — "as difficult a 1-2 start as you're going to get" |
| Middle | Vegas, Atlanta (H), Minnesota (H), at the Giants, Pittsburgh overseas, then the BYE |
| Post-bye | Cleveland, Carolina at home |
| Worry spots | at Chicago, at Cincinnati |
| Weeks 14-18 | Carolina, Tampa, Atlanta, Tampa — with Arizona sandwiched in |
The Timing Play
Scott: "Do NOT bet them at +270 right now. If they're 0-2 after Detroit and Baltimore, that becomes +300, +400. They could have a very bad record at the bye.
But look at how the season ENDS. Four division games from week 14 on with the Arizona cupcake in between. They could be in LAST PLACE entering week 14 and still win the division by going 4-1 in that stretch — as long as they take three of four in the division."
Bearman: "Jump in at the bye week. They come back from overseas having played Detroit, Baltimore, and Minnesota — you're looking at 2-5, maybe 3-4 at best. At that point you can probably get them at 3.5 or 4 to 1. And from week nine on, the only games I'd worry about are back-to-back at Chicago and at Cincinnati — and neither of those teams scares us. If you're 2-5 coming back, there's no reason you can't win six or seven of your last nine and take the division."
The verdict: an in-season play on the Saints division bet, or an in-season adjusted win total.
