⚾ THE DOUBLEHEADER SYSTEM CASHES AGAIN

Mets 3-2, Braves 1-0

The system: Mets took game one, Braves took game two. ✅

The wrinkle: Scott played the Braves -1.5 in the nightcap instead of the moneyline.

Chris Sale's line: 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 9 Ks. The Mets had two hits in the entire game — and Atlanta still couldn't cover.

Scott: "If you told me the Mets would get shut out with two hits, I'd have said for sure Atlanta covers a run and a half. But they still got the win, so the system comes through."

The Cy Young ripple: Sale up to +700, now the NL second favorite, ahead of both Phillies.

⚾ THE BULLPEN LESSON (AGAIN)

Marlins 8, Phillies 6 — Down 6-0

The sequence: Luzardo cruised four innings, gave up three in the fifth (fine — Philly led 6-0), then three MORE in the seventh to tie it. Marlins scored two in the eighth to win it.

The kicker: The team that just lost 12 straight SWEPT the Phillies.

⚾ YANKEES: THE EXTRA-INNING CURSE

White Sox 6, Yankees 5 (12 innings)

How it fell apart:

InningEvent
Top 1Yankees score FOUR (4-0)
Bottom 7CWS one run
Bottom 8CWS three runs — tied
Top 11Yankees score
Bottom 11Botched pickoff at third with two outs — tied again
12thWhite Sox win

Scott: "A boneheaded play. Why are you trying to pick a guy off third with two outs? Just get the batter out."

The record: Yankees are 1-7 in extra-inning games — the WORST in Major League Baseball.

The bright spot: Cam Schlittler — 6.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 8 K, ERA to 2.04. Now -145 favorite for AL Cy Young.

🏈 NFL NOTES

Aaron Donald: An Actual Possibility?

The news: Myles Garrett talked at Rams camp about getting Aaron Donald to come out of retirement. Sean McVay confirmed Donald is training on the side to see how his body responds before deciding.

Scott: "How ridiculous would that be? The Rams are already the Super Bowl favorite at +550 and already the NUMBER ONE trench team in our report. Aaron Donald comes back and this shortens to +400? Donald and Myles Garrett on the same defensive line — insane."

Bengals' Trenches Get Worse

The injury: DE Shemar Stewart carted off with a leg injury they fear could be season-ending.

The context: Last year's first-round pick, only 8 games and 1 sack as a rookie, but high hopes this season alongside the newly acquired Dexter Lawrence.

Scott: "We just talked about how badly they graded out in the trench report — dead last. If Stewart is out for the year, that's a big blow to an already poorly graded unit."

The Headline: No More Tomlin

Out: Mike Tomlin after 19 seasons — did you know he never a losing season?

In: Mike McCarthy — former Packers and Cowboys head coach, and Aaron Rodgers' head coach in Green Bay.

Scott: "That was a long time ago. Rodgers is 42 and in the swan song of his career. How McCarthy molds this offense around Rodgers' abilities at this age is going to be very interesting."

The Roster

Offense

The weapons: DK Metcalf (acquired last season) plus Michael Pittman (offseason add) — "two legit receivers who can win one-on-one battles and are very good down the field."

The QB2 battle: Mason Rudolph vs Will Howard, with rookie Drew Allar (Penn State) likely the No. 3 in the regular season. "One of Rudolph or Howard might find themselves on the outs."

Defense

Secondary: Free agent Jamel Dean immediately boosts it. "If Jalen Ramsey on the opposite side can play to form, we're talking a pretty good corner tandem."

Pass rush: TJ Watt at 30/1 DPOY. The camp report: Watt is working at BOTH left and right outside linebacker this year, not just the left side opposite Alex Highsmith.

Scott: "That's interesting — if it gives him a boost back to the form that kept him in the DPOY running year in and year out. Let's face it, rushing the quarterback has never been the Steelers' problem. With Watt, Highsmith, Herbig, and Sawyer, this team is going to get after the quarterback."

(Trench Report note: Pittsburgh ranks 8th in the preseason trench rankings.)

The Schedule Read

Opener: Home vs Atlanta (dealing with their own QB situation — likely Tua as Penix isn't ready).

International: October 25th vs the Saints in Paris.

Overall: Middle of the road — 16th-18th by Vegas win totals.

THE KEY: They don't play Baltimore until December 20th — and they play the Ravens two of their final four games. The first half before the bye is very manageable. (The Eagles on November 22nd is the one early spike.)

The Verdict + The Live Bet

Scott: "I have the Steelers as a nine-win team — over 8.5, and you can get plus money. Take a flyer on that. Whether they make the playoffs depends on the rest of the AFC. A couple of bounces their way and nine becomes ten; if not, nine becomes seven. Rodgers' health is the big thing."

THE ANGLE: "Because the second half after the bye is more difficult, this could be a team where you play a live/adjusted win total UNDER after the first couple weeks — if the Steelers get out to a great start."

The disclosure: "In the VSiN NFL betting guide, I did NOT have the Steelers making the playoffs. I had the Ravens winning the division and did not have Pittsburgh as one of my three AFC wild cards."
