⚾ THE SYSTEM BEATS THE STREAK

Red Sox Snapped at Record-Tying 15

The headline: The Red Sox won their 15th straight in game one of yesterday's doubleheader (6-3 over Baltimore) to TIE the franchise record... then the doubleheader system won out. Orioles 5, Red Sox 1 in the nightcap.

The system went 2-0 yesterday:

DoubleheaderG1G2
Pirates-YankeesPIT 5-3 (10 inn)NYY 2-0
Red Sox-OriolesBOS 6-3 (streak #15)BAL 5-1

The Doubleheader System Ledger

The rule: Blindly bet the loser of game 1 in game 2.

⚾ WELCOME BACK, MAX FRIED

The Line

5 shutout innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts

The twist: Fried was supposed to make another minor-league rehab start, but the doubleheader scrambled the rotation — so the Yankees just brought him to the Bronx. He looked like Max Fried.

⚾ THE OHTANI QUESTION

The Bullpen Session

The news: Ohtani threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session before the Dodgers' 9-5 win over the Phillies. Dave Roberts called it a "big sign."

The context: He's had skipped starts and a knee injection (the landing knee) — he's kept hitting, but hasn't pitched. Season line on the mound: 1.79 ERA in 85.2 IP.

The MVP Angle

Current odds: Ohtani -550 for NL MVP.

Scott: "There's a possibility he doesn't pitch again until September — or even the postseason. If he doesn't pitch the rest of the way, I don't know if he's a shoo-in for MVP. But if he returns soon and doesn't skip a beat — then yes, obviously, he's the most valuable player in the National League."
