Week 10 · College football — what the books did to the board while you weren't looking

Every Sunday the books rewrite the college board. They hang look-ahead numbers before the weekend, watch everybody play, then take those guesses down and put new ones up.

Sixty-one games, and 15 carried a number before Saturday's first kickoff. Those 15 — 30 numbers — are 53.5 points different this morning, and the two biggest moves are both exactly seven: Ohio State from −14 to −7, and the Texas–Missouri total from 50.5 to 43.5. The other 46 games had no price anywhere. Thirty-nine of the 61 carried one Sunday morning. All 61 did by Sunday night.

The Thing Worth Reading First

I've been tracking what happens when the books rewrite a number off one loss. Last week I had it at 0-for-3. It's 0-for-5 now, and the pattern has sharpened into something specific.

Split it by direction and it gets clearer. When the books cut a favorite after a loss, they are 0-for-4:

The cutWhat happened
Kansas State, −9.5 → −4.5Won by 11
Texas, −6.5 → −3Won by 7
Oregon, −7.5 → −3.5Won by 8
Texas Tech, −7.5 → −3.5Won by 8

Four for four, and not one was close — every team won by more than the number the books had just handed them. Oregon and Texas Tech were cut to the identical number off the identical loss and both won by exactly eight.

When the books raised a team after a loss it's 1-1: Alabama became a four-point bigger favorite and lost by 16, Ole Miss became a three-point bigger favorite and won by 30.

So the finding isn't "the books read losses too hard." It's narrower and more useful than that: cutting a favorite after a loss has been the losing side four straight times.

And I bet against my own thread on Saturday. My card had Arizona +3.5 — buying the Texas Tech cut rather than fading it. I wrote in that piece that this contradicted the column and argued the distinction was that Tech's peripherals had been bad before the loss, so the re-rate was confirmation rather than overreaction. Texas Tech won by eight. The thread was right, my exception was wrong, and I'd rather say it here than let you find it in the table below.

Which brings us to Ohio State, cut seven points after losing at USC — the biggest instance of this shape all season. One honest distinction, though: the other four cuts weren't driven by news. This one is. Julian Sayin is out with a throwing-arm injury, a true freshman made his first career start on the road, and Ryan Day said his team didn't "play well enough to support a young freshman quarterback who was making his first start on the road." A quarterback change is real information, not a result over-read. That's the argument for why this cut might be the one that holds — and it's the same argument I made for Texas Tech a week ago, so weigh it accordingly.

The Weekend Re-Rate

Oregon at Ohio State — DraftKings

SpreadOhio State −6−14−10.5−7−7+3.5
Total52.545.545.548.546.5+1

Seven points off Ohio State, and it crossed ten on the way. DraftKings had the Buckeyes −14 from Wednesday through Saturday morning, −10.5 Sunday morning, −7 by Sunday night, and it hasn't moved since. The same book's September look-ahead was −6, with nothing in my feed between then and late October.

Minus seven is a number DraftKings holds alone. FanDuel and BetRivers first posted this game Sunday morning, at −9.5 and −10, and both have been −7.5 since Sunday night. The total went the other way: DraftKings up three to 48.5, which is where all four sat Sunday night, and two of it back Monday night.

Oregon beat Northwestern 34-26. Ohio State lost at USC 30-18, with true freshman Luke Fahey making his first career start in place of Julian Sayin, out since a throwing-arm injury at Indiana.

Texas at Missouri — FanDuel

Look-ahead (Oct 26)Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
Total51.550.548.544.543.5−5
SpreadMissouri +5.5+3.5+3.5+2.5+2.5−1

Seven points off a total that wasn't high to start with: FanDuel had 50.5 Saturday morning, 48.5 Sunday morning, 44.5 by Sunday night, 43.5 now. The side came down too — Missouri was +5.5 when FanDuel put it up and is +2.5 today.

The four books are within half a point of each other now; Saturday they were two apart. DraftKings sat on 49.5 from Wednesday to Saturday, took it to 48.5 Sunday morning and 43.5 Sunday night — five points in one window — and hasn't moved since. BetRivers held 51.5 through Saturday, then went 48.5, 44.5, 44.

Texas beat Mississippi State 31-3 and Missouri won at Arkansas 34-10. Texas lost running back Hollywood Smothers and receivers Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo to injuries in that win, and Steve Sarkisian said afterward, "The severity of all those guys is unknown at the moment."

Note what that is: a seven-point total move on a team that won by 28. The result isn't the input here — the injury report is.

BYU at Utah — DraftKings

Look-ahead (Sep 1)Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
SpreadUtah −3−3−4.5−5.5−5.5−1
Total51.548.548.547.548.50

DraftKings hung Utah −3 on September 1, had it there again when its price came back last Wednesday, and still had it there at Saturday's noon look. By Saturday night it was −4.5, by Sunday night −5.5, and it hasn't moved since — two and a half points toward Utah, all of it after Saturday noon.

FanDuel and BetRivers went into the weekend at −2.5 and −3 and were at −5.5 and −6 by Sunday night; BetMGM posted Sunday morning and sits at −5. On the total, DraftKings had 51.5 in September and 48.5 when it came back, and since late October no book has been below 47 or above 48.5.

Utah won at Cincinnati 49-25 to stay unbeaten; BYU beat Arizona State 27-20. BYU running back LJ Martin hasn't played since a lower-body injury against TCU on October 3, and Kalani Sitake said last week, "LJ's getting really close."

Miami at Notre Dame — FanDuel

Look-ahead (Aug 5)Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
SpreadNotre Dame −6.5−3.5−4.5−5.5−5.5−1
Total54.555.555.557.557.5+2

Notre Dame was −6.5 at the first price from all three books that hung one early — FanDuel and BetRivers on August 5, DraftKings on September 1. Each came back in late October at −3.5; when in those seven weeks the three points went, I can't tell you. Two of them are back: FanDuel and DraftKings had −5.5 by Sunday night, BetRivers by Monday morning, and all four have it this morning.

The total moved at every book in the same window: 55.5 at all four going into Sunday night, 57.5 at all four by Sunday night, and that's where it sits. FanDuel had it as low as 53.5 last Wednesday morning.

Miami won at North Carolina 38-35 to stay unbeaten and No. 1; Notre Dame beat Navy 35-13. Mario Cristobal said his defense's showing was "certainly not the type of performance we want."

They Didn't Touch It

Penn State at Washington — the side. Four books, three different numbers, and not one has moved since it posted: FanDuel has Washington −1.5, BetMGM −2, DraftKings and BetRivers −2.5.

Rutgers at Wisconsin — the total, not the side. 45.5 at all four books at every look; Wisconsin's number moved two at FanDuel in the same window.

Rice at North Texas — the total, 64.5, at all four books at every look.

And a word on what these have been worth lately. Last week this section had Miami at North Carolina, with DraftKings frozen on North Carolina +14.5 at every look since Wednesday night. Miami won by three. North Carolina covered by 11.5. Two weeks before that, Iowa at Washington sat on a 41.5 total at all 13 of its checks and the game went 65.

A frozen number means the books saw nothing worth changing their minds about. It does not mean they were right. Twice now the most confident number on my board has been the most wrong one, and I'd rather point that out than keep presenting these as a sign of anything.

How Last Week's Moves Did

Last Tuesday I put four games in front of you, eight numbers. Two never moved, so six to grade, and only two went the right way — both of them Ole Miss.

Oregon and Texas Tech were both cut from −7.5 to −3.5 and both won by exactly eight. The Oregon total came down five into a game that went 60. UCF was flipped to favorite and beaten by 32.

Two numbers went home again after Tuesday. Ole Miss closed at −10.5: the books had run it to −13.5, the market handed all three points back by kickoff, and Ole Miss won by 30 — so the books' re-rate was right and the late money was wrong. Baylor–UCF went the other way: the flip was out by Thursday night, UCF closed a 1.5-point underdog again, and Baylor won by 32.

The Full Board

Everything that moved a point and a half or more since it opened, at a book with four or more looks and a second book going the same way.

Opened is that book's first print. Sun. open is that book's first Sunday number, marked (n) when that was the night look. Since Sun. is what it's done after that. Where a strip above anchors to a different date than its row here, the strip is showing the week and the row is showing the life of the number.

Reading the move column: for spreads, + means the line moved toward the underdog and − toward the favorite. For totals, + is up and − is down.

How I Measure This

Every number here is one book against itself — its own look-ahead, its own opener, its own price today. Averaging books that started in different places invents movement that never happened, so I don't do it. Where a game leans on one book, I name the book.

I also throw out anything that's just one book posting a number and correcting itself overnight with nothing else confirming it. That's not a market moving, that's a guy fixing a typo. Fifteen of those came out this week.

Saturday is when I tell you what I think of these numbers. Tuesday is just the tape.

Lines are US-book prices captured Tuesday morning and they'll keep moving. Shop your number.
