Week 9 · College football — what the books did to the board while you weren't looking

Every Sunday the books rewrite the college board. They hang look-ahead numbers before the weekend, watch everybody play, then take those guesses down and put new ones up. By the time you sit down you're not watching the market move, you're reading where it landed.

The Thing Worth Reading First

Every featured re-rate below came off a loss, and the books are now 0-for-3 on those.

I started tracking this two weeks ago. Alabama lost at home and the books made them a four-point bigger favorite — Tennessee won by 16. Kansas State lost at home and the books cut them five — Kansas State won by 11. Last week I told you Texas was the third of the shape, cut 3.5 points after losing at home, and that it was the exact number that had fooled them twice. Texas won by seven. Three for three.

Now look at this week's board. Oregon lost and got cut four. Texas Tech lost and got cut four. Ole Miss lost and became a three-point bigger favorite. Three more re-rates, all off losses, in both directions.

I'm not telling you how to bet any of them. I'm telling you the books have been reading single results too hard for a month, and this week almost everything they rewrote is that shape.

The Weekend Re-Rate

Northwestern at Oregon — DraftKings

Look-aheadBefore the weekendMonday openMonday nightNowSince Mon. open
SpreadOregon −7.5−7.5−3.5−3.5−3.50
Total50.552.549.547.547.5−2

Four points off Oregon, and a total that has been as high as 52.5 and as low as 47.5 — a five-point range, the widest any one book has put on a number this week. (Net from the Wednesday open it's three; from Friday it's five. Same number, two honest ways to count it.)

DraftKings opened Oregon −7.5 Wednesday night and still had it there Friday morning. The next look, Monday morning, was −3.5, and it hasn't moved since. FanDuel and BetMGM posted at −3.5; BetRivers has bounced between −3 and −3.5. None of the three ever showed me the old number.

The total is the louder one: 50.5 Wednesday night, 52.5 by Friday morning, 49.5 Monday morning, two more off during the day, and all four books at 47.5 now.

Oregon lost at Illinois 21-10. Northwestern beat Rutgers 42-14 at home. At Monday's press conference Dan Lanning said of quarterback Dante Moore, out since a concussion at USC on September 26: "I'm not anticipating him being back this season, no."

That quarterback news is the one piece of this that isn't a result the books read off a single Saturday — and it landed after the number had already moved.

Arizona at Texas Tech — DraftKings

Look-aheadBefore the weekendMonday openMonday nightNowSince Mon. open
SpreadTexas Tech −7.5−7.5−3.5−3.5−3.50
Total52.554.554.554.554.50

The same four points and the same two numbers as Oregon, in a different game. The side ran through seven. The total went the other way and then quit: 52.5 Wednesday night, 54.5 by Friday morning, and 54.5 ever since.

DraftKings had Texas Tech −7.5 from Wednesday night through Friday morning and −3.5 at every look since Monday morning. FanDuel had it before the weekend too: −6.5 Friday, −4.5 Monday morning, −3.5 by night. BetMGM has been −3.5 since it posted; BetRivers is the holdout at −3. On the total, BetRivers printed 55.5 Monday morning and came down to the other three.

Arizona beat Iowa State 39-3 at home. Texas Tech lost at Cincinnati 37-24. At Monday's press conference Joey McGuire said running back Cameron Dickey, who had missed two games with an ankle injury, practiced Sunday and is back: "It's going to be good to have him back."

Auburn at Ole Miss — DraftKings

Before the weekendMonday openMonday nightNowSince Mon. open
SpreadOle Miss −10.5−13.5−13.5−13.50
Total53.557.557.557.50

Ole Miss lost on Saturday and came out of the weekend a three-point bigger favorite, and the total went up four in the same stretch. Both numbers moved toward Ole Miss scoring more, on a game whose favorite just lost by seven.

That's the Alabama shape exactly — lose, and get a bigger number — and that one cost the books 16 points.

DraftKings had Ole Miss −10.5 from Wednesday night to Friday morning and −13.5 at every look since Monday morning. FanDuel posted −12.5 Monday morning and came to −13.5 by night; BetMGM and BetRivers have both had −13 since they posted. The total hasn't moved since Monday morning either: DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM all say 57.5, BetRivers 57.

Auburn lost at home to LSU 38-17. Ole Miss lost at Texas 34-27. At Monday's press conference Pete Golding ruled running back Kewan Lacy out: "With the combination of both of those, he's not going to play this week."

Both of those finals were on Saturday's card, and both cashed. LSU −7 won by 21 — the letdown read on Auburn after the Georgia upset, which is the same argument that blew up on me three weeks ago at Kentucky. And Ole Miss–Texas went 61 against my over 53.5. I'll take the week.

The Only Number That Changed Hands

Baylor at UCF — DraftKings

Monday openMonday nightNowSince Mon. open
SpreadUCF +1.5−1.5−1.5−3
Total47.547.547.50

One favorite changed hands this week, and it changed at all four books inside the same window.

This game had no price anywhere until Monday morning. When it posted, DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and BetRivers all had UCF a 1.5-point home underdog. By Monday night all four had UCF a 1.5-point favorite — three points, four books, one window — and nothing has moved since. The total never budged: 47.5 at DraftKings at all three looks, 48.5 at the other three.

UCF beat BYU 39-31. Baylor lost at Kansas 25-24. Baylor fired head coach Dave Aranda on Sunday — athletic director Doug McNamee said "we believe a change in leadership is necessary at this time for our program," and named defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman interim head coach.

Here's the part I'd sit with. The firing happened before any book posted a number on this game. So the coaching change was already in the opening price, and the market still took three more points out of Baylor on top of it. Whatever moved this, it wasn't the news.

They Didn't Touch It

Missouri at Arkansas — the total, and not one of the four books has moved it: FanDuel 48.5 since Friday morning, DraftKings and BetMGM 49.5 since Monday, BetRivers 49. Never agreed, never budged.

South Carolina at Oklahoma — the side. DraftKings has had Oklahoma −5.5 at all six looks since Wednesday night; FanDuel opened a point short of it Monday and came to it this morning, and BetMGM and BetRivers are still short.

Miami at North Carolina — the side, not the total. DraftKings has had North Carolina +14.5 at every look since Wednesday night; FanDuel flashed 15.5 Monday morning and came back, and BetRivers still sits on 15. The total went up two.

How Last Week's Moves Did

Last Tuesday I put five games in front of you, ten numbers on the strips. Two never moved, which leaves eight to grade, and five of the eight went the right way.

The three misses have one thing in common, and I want to state it accurately rather than tidily: the books read a single result too hard. Only one of the three was a loss. Clemson got flipped to favorite off a 37-0 win over an FCS team and then lost to Virginia Tech by four. Texas got cut 3.5 after losing at home and won by seven — the loss re-rate, and the third straight one the books have missed. And the BYU–UCF total came down two off a BYU win and a UCF bye, in a game that then went 70.

One middle, a mean little one. Tennessee–South Carolina's total came down a point, 51.5 to 50.5, and the game landed on 51 — right between, so the early under cashed and the number I printed Tuesday did not.

Colorado State cut the other way, and it wasn't close. The books ran that total from 60.5 to 64.5, the market gave two back before kickoff, and the game went 105. They moved it four points and finished 40 short.

The Full Board

Everything that moved a point and a half or more since it opened, at a book with at least four looks and a second book going the same way.

Opened is that book's first print. Mon. open is that book's first number on Monday — the first look anybody got after the weekend, since there is no Sunday in this week's log. Since Mon. is what it's done after that.

Reading the move column: for spreads, + means the line moved toward the underdog and − toward the favorite. For totals, + is up and − is down.

How I Measure This

Every number here is one book against itself — its own look-ahead, its own opener, its own price today. Averaging books that started in different places invents movement that never happened, so I don't do it. Where a game leans on one book, I name the book.

I also throw out anything that's just one book posting a number and correcting itself overnight with nothing else confirming it. That's not a market moving, that's a guy fixing a typo. Fifteen of those came out this week.

Saturday is when I tell you what I think of these numbers. Tuesday is just the tape.

Lines are US-book prices captured Tuesday morning and they'll keep moving. Shop your number.
