Week 8 · College football — what the books did to the board while you weren't looking

Every Sunday the books rewrite the college board. They hang look-ahead numbers before the weekend, watch everybody play, then take those guesses down and put new ones up. By the time you sit down you're not watching the market move, you're reading where it landed.

This week they rewrote two sides of it. Fifty-three games, and 17 carried a number before Saturday's first kickoff. Two of the 17 changed hands:

Two favorites changed on the strength of one FCS game and one bye.

The Weekend Re-Rate

Tennessee at South Carolina — DraftKings

Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
SpreadSouth Carolina +1.5+3−1.5−2.5−5.5
Total51.551.550.550.5−1

South Carolina didn't play on Saturday. Its number moved four points anyway.

DraftKings had South Carolina +1.5 from Thursday night through Saturday noon, then +3 Sunday morning. Twelve hours later it was −1.5, and it's been −2.5 since Monday morning. All four books have the Gamecocks favored.

Tennessee beat Alabama at home 26-10. South Carolina was idle, its last game a 38-19 win at Florida. At his Monday press conference Josh Heupel would not name Tennessee's quarterback: "You will figure it out when we get to gameday."

Note which direction that went. Tennessee won by 16 and the number moved away from them — the book is pricing the quarterback question, not the result.

Virginia Tech at Clemson — DraftKings

Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
SpreadClemson +1.5+1.5−3−2.5−4
Total49.549.549.549.50

The other flip took one window. A home dog from Wednesday to Sunday morning, then a favorite, and the total sat still through all of it.

DraftKings printed Clemson +1.5 eight times, the last at nine o'clock Sunday morning. By Sunday night it was −3, and the other three books now say −2.5 or −3.

Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech 34-24 at home. Clemson beat Charleston Southern 37-0. Four points moved toward the team that played the FCS opponent, and the total didn't care: DraftKings has had 49.5 all week, except for a blip to 48.5 Monday morning, and all four books sit there now.

Ole Miss at Texas — DraftKings

Sep 1Before the weekendSunday openSunday nightNow
SpreadTexas −8.5−6.5−3−3.5−3
Total54.553.553.552.553.5

Three and a half points came off Texas in the one window where this number was visible. Nothing since — the side hasn't moved more than half a point from the Sunday open, and the total went down a point and came back.

DraftKings had Texas −8.5 through the first week of September. The game vanished from my feed until October 14, came back at −6.5, and stayed there until noon Saturday, as Texas kicked off against Florida. The next print, nine o'clock Sunday morning, was −3.

Florida beat Texas in Austin 27-24. Ole Miss beat Missouri 31-3. On Monday Steve Sarkisian said of quarterback Arch Manning, "He's our starter, but I need to see a better version of Arch Manning."

This is the third home-loss re-rate in two weeks, and the first two went badly. Look at the scorecard below: Alabama lost at home and the books made them a four-point bigger favorite — Tennessee won by 16. Kansas State lost at home and the books cut them from −9.5 to −4.5 — Kansas State won by 11. Opposite directions, both wrong. Now Texas has lost at home and the books have taken 3.5 off them. I'm not telling you which way to bet it. I'm telling you this is the exact shape of number that has fooled them twice in a row.

BYU at UCF — DraftKings

Oct 14Sunday openSunday nightNowSince Sun. open
SpreadUCF +9.5+7.5+6.5+6.5−1
Total45.545.544.543.5−2

BYU beat Notre Dame on Saturday night and came out of the weekend a smaller favorite.

DraftKings posted UCF +9.5 last Wednesday night. 8.5 Thursday night. 7.5 by Saturday morning — two points gone before BYU played a snap. Across the two Sunday-night looks it went 7, then 6.5, and it's been 6.5 since. Three points, through seven, and all four books say 6.5 this morning.

BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24 at home. UCF was off, its last game a 42-28 loss at Oklahoma State. The total came down two over the same stretch: 45.5 at DraftKings from Wednesday to Sunday morning, 43.5 since Monday morning, and all four books are there now.

Two things are pushing that total. UCF has played without starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III since September 12, and ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Tuesday that he won't start Saturday. And the National Weather Service has northeast wind at 15 to 25 mph in Orlando on Saturday, gusting to 35 — past the line where I start pricing wind, with gusts well past it.

One That Didn't Wait For The Weekend

The two biggest numbers on this week's board didn't move this week. If you scan the full board below, the top two rows are an 11.5-point spread move and an 11-point total move, and both are artifacts of my blind spot rather than news.

Texas A&M at Alabama opened at Alabama −2.5 on September 1 and is Alabama −14.5 now. Twelve points. Indiana at Michigan opened at a 52.5 total and is 41.5. Eleven points. Both games went dark in my feed from early September to October 14, along with Ole Miss–Texas and Houston–Utah, so I can tell you what the number was on either side of the gap and nothing in between.

Since the Sunday open, those two have moved 1.5 points and 1 point. Treat the big figure as the life of the number, not the week — and if you see either on somebody's list of this week's biggest moves, that's what they're actually showing you.

One That Waited For Monday

San Diego State at Colorado State — FanDuel

Sunday openSunday nightMonday nightNowSince Sun. open
Total60.559.564.564.5+4
SpreadColorado State +2.5+2.5+1.5+1.5−1

The loudest of Monday's fifteen consensus moves: four points onto a total, with the side going the other way.

FanDuel went from 60.5 Monday morning to 64.5 Monday night, and DraftKings, BetMGM and BetRivers all climbed from 60.5 inside the same twelve hours. Measured off Sunday night's 59.5 it's five points in a day and a half.

The side went the other way: every book took at least a point off Colorado State in that window, and FanDuel went from +2.5 to +1.5.

Colorado State lost 66-27 at Texas State on Thursday, the third straight game it has given up 56 or more. San Diego State beat Fresno State 26-23 late Saturday night.

Both quarterbacks were news on Monday. San Diego State's Jayden Denegal left Saturday's game in the second quarter, and Sean Lewis said Monday he is "day to day." Jim Mora said Monday that Hauss Hejny, out with a hamstring injury, practiced fully and will start for Colorado State. The Fort Collins forecast is mild, with light wind.

So the total went up four on a defense that can't stop anybody, and the side came in a point on a quarterback coming back. Two different pieces of news, two different halves of the game, same twelve hours.

They Didn't Touch It

Houston at Utah — the side, not the total. Utah has been −6.5 or −7 at DraftKings every time I've looked since September 1, and it's −6.5 at all four books now. FanDuel and BetRivers each flashed −5.5 Sunday morning and came back.

The total is the opposite story: up six since September, from 50.5 to 56.5. Same game, same book, one half frozen and the other half moved a touchdown. (This is also one of the four games that went dark in my feed, so that six points had a month to happen in.)

How Last Week's Moves Did

Last Tuesday I put four games in front of you, five numbers in all. Three went the right way.

Both misses were spreads the books had rewritten off a home loss — and that's the finding I'd take out of this week more than any single number. Alabama became a four-point bigger favorite after losing at home, and Tennessee won by 16. Kansas State got cut from −9.5 to −3.5 after losing at home, and won by 11. The books moved in opposite directions on the same situation and got it wrong both times.

No middles this week — every number that went the right way also won at the close. The other three moved further the same way after Tuesday and all three cashed.

DraftKings for four, FanDuel for Mississippi State–LSU. Closes are each book's last price before kickoff.

Worth noting the Wisconsin–UCLA total: 49.5 before the weekend, 42.5 at the close, and the game went 24. The books took seven points off and were still nowhere near low enough. That's the Iamaleava injury I wrote about last week doing exactly what a season-ending quarterback injury does.

The Full Board

Everything that moved a point and a half or more since it opened.

Opened is that book's first print — for the September rows, well before last weekend, and for the four games that went dark, mostly unobserved. Sun. open is that book's first number on Sunday, marked (n) when that book didn't post until Sunday night. Since Sun. is what it's done after that. Where a strip above anchors to a different date than its row here, the strip is showing the week and the row is showing the life of the number.

Reading the move column: for spreads, + means the line moved toward the underdog and − toward the favorite. For totals, + is up and − is down.

How I Measure This

Every number here is one book against itself — its own look-ahead, its own opener, its own price today. Averaging books that started in different places invents movement that never happened, so I don't do it. Where a game leans on one book, I name the book.

I also throw out anything that's just one book posting a number and correcting itself overnight with nothing else confirming it. That's not a market moving, that's a guy fixing a typo. Fifteen of those came out this week.

Saturday is when I tell you what I think of these numbers. Tuesday is just the tape.

Lines are US-book prices captured Tuesday morning and they'll keep moving. Shop your number.
