The 2026 Trench Strength of Schedule Report

Bettor Day  ·  Preseason Projection
The 2026 Trench
Strength of Schedule Report
Every season is decided in the trenches. This year, we can see the collisions coming.

For the first time, we’ve built a full preseason Trench Report projection — 2025 player grades and composite metrics mapped onto current 2026 depth charts, aggregated into the same four composites you’ll follow here all season: Run Block, Pass Block, Run Defense, Pass Rush. Then we ran every team’s projection against the entire 2026 schedule to answer a question nobody else is asking: whose lines face the hardest road — and where are the collisions the market hasn’t priced?

How to read this, honestly: this is a projection, built from last season’s player grades on this season’s rosters. Rookies without pro grades are held at positional average until preseason grading arrives in August. Scores are league-relative (z-scores), not point spreads — they tell you who wins the matchup, not by how much. Live ratings take over the moment Week 1 is in the books.

This is Part 1: the map. Part 2 — the plays, with market prices attached — drops later this week.

The Landscape: How Every Front Projects

The full projection, best trenches first. Overall is the average of the four composites. Green = strength, red = weakness.

The Rams are the trench team of 2026, and it isn’t close — No. 1 in Run Block, Run Defense, and Pass Rush. The engine is Myles Garrett (a 93.3 pass-rush grade, the best number in our entire dataset) alongside Byron Young (81.2), with Poona Ford anchoring the middle. Their one flaw — pass protection (−1.05) — is real, and it’s the only thing keeping this from being a perfect profile.

Philadelphia owns the pocket (No. 1 Pass Block), and Denver is the most complete front in football — the only team top-10 in all four categories.

At the bottom, Cincinnati projects last overall — and they went shopping. The Bengals acquired Dexter Lawrence this offseason, and the projection still has them 31st in Run Defense. The brutal part: Lawrence’s 57.0 run-defense grade is the best interior run grade on the unit. His elite number is the 84.5 pass-rush grade — real value, wrong problem. Around him: Jonathan Allen at 45.4 against the run, and a linebacker room grading 34.4 / 50.0 / 50.5. One star can’t fix a front.

The Team That Never Loses

17–0
Los Angeles Rams
Projected to win the trench battle in every game they play. Toughest week: +1.96 over Philadelphia.
0–17
Cincinnati Bengals
Projected to lose the trench battle in every game. Best week of the year: −1.37 at Miami.

Run the projection through all 272 games and one fact towers over the rest: the Rams win the trenches every single week. Four other teams lose exactly once all season — Philadelphia, Denver, and Tampa Bay, whose only projected trench loss is to the Rams, and Houston, whose only loss is to Philadelphia. The entire top of the league’s trench hierarchy funnels to one team in Los Angeles.

The Schedule: Trench SOS, All 32

Every slate measured the way the trenches actually work — your run blocking against their run defenses, your protection against their pass rushes, and vice versa — averaged across all 17 opponents. Higher = tougher road; here red = harder and green = softer.

Column key: “vs Run Def” = the run defenses your run blocking faces; “vs Pass Rush” = the pass rushes your protection faces; “vs Run Blk” = the run-blocking units your run defense faces; “vs Pass Blk” = the protections your pass rush faces.

Arizona (No. 1) — and the scariest column on the whole table is theirs: a +0.55 run-blocking slate faced by their run defense. Living in the NFC West means the Cardinals’ bottom-four run defense gets the Rams’ No. 1 run-blocking unit twice and the 49ers’ No. 2 unit twice. Four games a year against the two best run-blocking machines in football, absorbed by one of the league’s worst run fronts.

Dallas (No. 2) — the collision course of the season. The league’s worst pass protection (−2.33) — poor tackle grades on an otherwise decent interior — draws the second-toughest pass-rush slate in football (+0.31). The worst unit meets the hardest test, seventeen times.

Jacksonville (No. 5) carries the single toughest pass-protection slate in the league (+0.37). The Giants and Chargers (Nos. 3–4) are tough almost everywhere, with the Chargers’ misery concentrated in a brutal Weeks 7–12 stretch (+0.43). At the other end, Detroit gets the softest overall road in football — remember that when the Lions’ line stats look elite in November. Some of that is the road, not the truck.

The Calendar: When Each Schedule Turns

Season-long averages hide the best information. The phase splits show whose season is front-loaded and whose gets hard late.

DAL−0.01+0.33+0.26+0.26

Seattle is the sharpest back-load in the league — a gentle three-month on-ramp, then the hardest closing stretch of any team in football (+0.61), headlined by the Rams twice in Weeks 16 and 18. Whatever the Seahawks look like in October, discount it. Tampa Bay and Las Vegas share the shape: open soft, finish hard, early records likely to flatter. And Dallas doesn’t just have a hard schedule — it’s a hard schedule that gets harder after September.

Front-Loaded — survive early, cruise late

CHI+0.02−0.02−0.31−0.32
CAR+0.14+0.15−0.17−0.30

Denver is the mirror image of Seattle — the league’s sharpest front-load. The Broncos’ elite front faces its hardest tests immediately, then the schedule melts into the league’s softest December. If they start slow against the early gauntlet, the market will bury them right as the road turns to butter.

Circle These Games

Rams over Raiders, Week 7   +9.34
The single biggest mismatch in the dataset — LA’s No. 1 front against the last-ranked run defense.
Rams over Packers, Week 12   +9.17
Green Bay’s bottom-five protection and run defense meet the buzzsaw.
Cardinals vs. Rams, Weeks 6 & 10   −7.79 each
Arizona’s twice-yearly nightmare — the largest repeated mismatch on any schedule.
Broncos over Raiders, Weeks 11 & 15   +7.30 each
Denver’s December cruise, quantified — plus Miami in Week 13 at +7.02.
Chiefs over Bengals, Week 14   +6.67
The heaviest blow on Cincinnati’s 0-for-17 calendar; Houston’s Week 2 visit (+6.62) is next.
Ravens over Bengals, Weeks 7 & 17   +5.19 each
Baltimore’s twice-yearly gift — the biggest scheduled edge any team gets on a division rival.

The Collision Index: Where Talent Meets Road

One last cut: each team’s own trench strength minus the road it faces. The extremes tell you whose season the schedule is quietly making — or breaking.

Elite fronts whose schedules get out of the way: the Rams (+1.59), Broncos (+1.08), Eagles (+1.00), Chiefs (+0.66), and Texans (+0.62) — the five best trench collisions in the league all belong to its best trench teams, each drawing an average-or-softer road.

Weak fronts the schedule refuses to help: Miami, Arizona, Green Bay, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati — bottom-five fronts, and not one of them drew a soft slate to hide behind. Arizona’s is the cruelest pairing: the 28th-ranked front on the co-toughest road in football.

And one team that’s purely a schedule story: Minnesota. The Vikings project as exactly league-average up front (+0.00, 13th) — but they drew the third-softest slate in football, vaulting them to a top-10 collision score. If Minnesota’s trenches look good this season, check the opponent before you believe it. That’s either a mirage — or a value signal. We’ll take that up in Part 2.

What Happens Next

Preseason grading starts in mid-August, and rookie linemen get patched into the projection with real (discounted) pro grades — watch for movement on teams starting first-year tackles. The moment Week 1 is in the books, the projection retires and the live Trench Report takes over, powered by actual 2026 play-by-play — same four composites, updated every week all season.

Part 2 drops this week: the plays. Win totals, team props, and futures where the market’s number disagrees with the trench map — with current prices attached.
