Houston Rockets 1st Quarter Moneyline

Immediate revenge spot.

On the season, the Rockets have far superior metrics (+5.3 Cleaning the Glass Net Rating vs. +1.7 for the Lakers). While the Lakers have been better lately and since the AS break, the overall numbers at minimum justify the market assessment that these are essentially even teams — which makes the immediate revenge spot even more potent.

Home teams in this spot who lost their game to the same opponent are 58% ATS (70-51-6) in the 1Q since 2021. If the last matchup was also at home, those teams are 61% ATS (48-31-4) in the 1Q, on average winning the first quarter by +1.3 points despite on average being 1-point underdogs in these games.

Alperen Sengun — Houston's second-leading scorer and the anchor of everything the Rockets do in half-court offense — was a late scratch with lower back pain in their first matchup on Monday. He's listed as questionable for tonight but expected to play. His absence Monday simplified the Lakers' entire defensive scheme: without a credible second threat in the paint, JJ Redick could deploy extended Durant double-teams from the opening possession without paying much of a coverage tax elsewhere. With Sengun back in the lineup, that calculus changes significantly and their overall better-balanced roster will be displayed.

The other half of this equation is Durant himself. He scored 18 points but only two after halftime, committed seven of Houston's 24 turnovers, and didn't mince words afterward. "I just felt like I lost the game for us tonight," he said. "It's on me." He went further, diagnosing exactly what the Lakers took from him — the iso comfort, the pindown rhythm, the pick-and-roll angles — and sketching out his own counter-adjustments for the rematch. Durant's accountability, I believe, is a leading indicator of the focus he and the team will bring to this game, especially early.

I don't mind laying the half-point here but prefer the extra insurance of a ML bet. Either way, take the Rockets in 1Q.
