Indiana Pacers Team Total Under 107.5
We have a two-fer here: Celtics off a loss generally, and Celtics off a loss vs. a given opponent.
I’ve tracked the birth of this modern good Celtics team to January 2022 and the numbers speak for themselves.
A.) They’ve been good. 72.5% SU across that time, best in the league by nearly 8 percentage points (Nuggets 64.9%). ATS they’re second at 53.1%, (miles behind the Thunder, who are an incredible 60% ATS in regular season games over the last four years! Might be the best coaching run from that perspective in North American sports history given the number of games, just saying (strong lean: OKC -9.5 @ MIL).
B.) They’re better and better defensively off a loss. Since Jan 1, 2022: 75% SU, 64% ATS, both best in the league by a bullet. They’re holding teams 3.0 points below Vegas expectations, two thirds of their overall positive ATS margin.
C.) They’re better and better defensively when facing an opponent who beat them last time out. The Celtics since 2022 are 55% ATS in the regular season vs. a team that beat them in their last match-up, like the Pacers did on January 12th. They’re +3.4 ATS in those games, and 3.2 of that comes from holding teams below their scoring expectations.
The attitude and performance has transcended coaching change over, and even Jayson Tatum. This year, the Celtics are good, good off a loss (opponents are 5-10 vs. their team total) and good when facing an opponent that beat them last time out (5-8). Combined opponents have gone over their team total in only 10 of 28 games vs. the Celtics in these spots this season, right in line with their multi-year history.
