⚾ THE MIZ PROBLEM: A RECONSIDERATION

What He Did to Colorado

Misiorowski's line: 5 IP, 1 hit (a solo homer), 12 strikeouts, ERA to 1.58

The feats:

Scott Reconsiders — Partly

Scott: "I've been saying his number was dumb. Minus 550 WAS dumb. Minus 260 is probably still dumb — what if he only pitches four or five innings every start the rest of the way? What if starts get skipped in August and September?"

The new worry — one word: SENSATIONALISM.

Scott: "The strikeout records, the strikeout feats, the velocity — I think that's going to sway voters when it's all said and done. If this gets below -200, we might have to go in on Miz. His accolades might be too much for the writers to ignore."

The Sanchez slip: 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 101 pitches vs the Yankees on Sunday night. ERA up to 2.73.

⚾ THE MARLINS THEORY

Twelve Straight Losses

They have not won since the All-Star break.

Yesterday's version: Led 3-1 through five, Lake Bachar gave up four in the eighth. Scott: "I'm so dumb for not betting them in the first five — that's the win we should have gotten. I tweeted they might never win a game for the rest of the year."

Scott's Clubhouse Hypothesis

The theory: The streak began at the exact moment everyone was singing their praises — the "they're not sellers anymore, they're keeping Sandy, they're three back of Atlanta" narrative peak.

Scott: "I wonder if someone inside or outside the organization got wind that the Marlins were STILL planning to sell — and that trickled into the clubhouse. I don't think it's a coincidence they lose 12 straight right at that moment."

The Silver Lining

Scott: "This losing streak is the best thing that could have happened. Now they WILL be sellers. They'll trade Sandy Alcantara and maybe others — which is what they should do. This doesn't have to be a five-year rebuild. They can compete next year and for years after. They just aren't good enough THIS year. The streak got rid of the delusions."

Deadline: August 3rd.

⚾ TONIGHT'S CARD

Phillies at Marlins — Wheeler on the Bump

The matchup: Zack Wheeler (10-2, 2.16) vs Tyler Phillips

Scott's lean: "First five UNDER — maybe the Phillies bats are tired after a late night in Philly, and Wheeler should limit a Marlins offense that's been pathetic. Or back the Phillies F5, or the Marlins team total under in the first five. I want to be behind Wheeler tonight."

Yankees at White Sox — The Sunday Night Fade

The matchup: Max Fried, second start off the IL (first: 5 shutout IP, 1 hit, 7 K)

The wrinkle: Cody Bellinger to the 10-day IL — an already weak lineup gets weaker.

Scott: "I want to back Fried AND fade the Yankees bats. So it's the full game under, or at the very least the first five under."

Day Game

Mariners at Rangers: George Kirby vs Kumar Rocker — SEA -137

🏈 NFL NOTE: BRISSETT'S PAY BUMP

What It Really Means

The deal: $15.5M guaranteed, up to $21M with incentives. No new years added — still a free agent after the season.

Scott: "You don't give a guy a $15 million guaranteed pay bump if you're not planning on him being your starter for the majority of the season. Brissett is the quarterback in Arizona — they are NOT handing the reins to Carson Beck anytime soon."

The context: The Cardinals are projected for the worst record in the NFL and the No. 1 overall pick.

🏈 32 IN 32 : BALTIMORE RAVENS

The Market

MarketLine
Super Bowl+1200 (3rd, tied with SEA)
AFC North-105
Win total10.5 (over -140)

Division: Ravens -105, Bengals +165, Steelers +550, Browns +2200

The Big Question: Jesse Minter

First-Time Head Coach Alert

The transition: Out with the John Harbaugh regime. In comes Jesse Minter — the other Harbaugh's DC in LA, and before that Jim Harbaugh's DC at Michigan.

Scott's caution: "This isn't just a first-YEAR head coach, it's a first-TIME head coach. Compare that to Jeff Hafley in Miami — at least he ran Boston College and knows what it takes to lead an organization. Minter has only ever been an assistant, and only TWO seasons in the NFL. There has to be a learning curve. There have to be growing pains."

The Defense: The Strength

Trench Report final rankings (last season):

UnitNFL Rank
Run defense8th
Pass rush28th

The additions: Trey Hendrickson should make an immediate impact. Calais Campbell still there at an advanced age.

The key return: Nnamdi Madubuike — hasn't played since Week 2 of last season (neck injury). Reports say he could be cleared to practice as early as next week.

Active PUP list entering Wednesday's camp opener: Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, Teddy Buchanan (ILB), Adisa Isaac (OLB), Bilhal Kone (CB)

Scott: "Adding Hendrickson and getting Madubuike back will help that pass rush for sure. In Minter's system, this defense could be formidable."

The Offense: The Wild Card

Declan Doyle, Age 30

The résumé: One of the youngest coordinators in the NFL — was Caleb Williams' OC in Chicago last year.

The Ravens' trend:

YearTotal Yards
20241st in the NFL
Last season16th (11th in points)

The Chicago comp: The Bears went from LAST in total yards in 2024 to 6th last season under that staff.

The Betting Angle: Explosives

The number: Caleb Williams had 28 completions traveling 20+ air yards last season — 5th most in the NFL.

Scott: "If they're going to be more of a downfield passing attack, that makes us feel a lot better about Lamar's outlook and Zay Flowers' outlook. Look at props on longest reception and things like that."

Zay Flowers on Doyle (during OTAs): "He has stuff that I've never seen — plays and routes and stuff to help you get open."

The Verdict

Scott: "I think the Ravens are the class of this division by default. I don't see the Bengals having a resurgence. I'm down on the Steelers — we'll see what Mike McCarthy brings in year one. The Browns are an absolute mess whether it's Watson or Shedeur."

But: "Do I see them as an 11-to-12 win team? A top seed in the AFC? I just don't know yet. The talent is there — there are just more question marks than answers. New coaching, pieces fitting together, and a defense that's better schematically but older with injury history. A wait-and-see approach on the Ravens."
