🧀 PACKERS 27, PANTHERS 19 — AND AN HONEST GRADE

Green Bay moves to 5-3. Carolina falls to 3-4, which means Atlanta can take first place in the NFC South with a win over Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The under was right. Everything else was wrong.

LegResult
UNDER 47.5✅ WON — 46 points
Josh Jacobs OVER 58.5 rushing❌ LOST — 21 carries, 39 yards
Bryce Young OVER 256.5 passing❌ LOST — 23/41, 209 yards
Jordan Love UNDER 1.5 passing TDs❌ LOST — 3 touchdowns
Jordan Love NO interception (standalone)❌ LOST

The parlay is dead and it's worth sitting with why, because the thesis wasn't lazy. Carolina has one of the worst run defenses in the NFL — 29th in run defense in the Trench Report — and every team all season had run on them except the Eagles, who didn't have healthy running backs for that game. Green Bay was committed to the run. They tried to get Jacobs going early and often.

He got 21 carries. He gained 39 yards.

⭐ This is the cleanest example you'll see of a correct matchup read producing a wrong number. The volume showed up. The yards didn't. Nothing about the process was wrong — the Panthers just played their best run defense of the season on the night everybody bet against it.

Jacobs did score twice — a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown — so if you took him to score two at +400, you cashed. That's the version of the thesis that worked.

Jordan Love: 30-of-41, 288 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT. Three touchdowns kills the under; the interception kills the standalone. Targets went to Tucker Kraft and Matthew Golden — "the Matthew Golden experience is just unbelievable," a touchdown catch and another drop in the same night.

And the toughness story of the night: Christian Watson. Eight catches, 113 yards, left the game and was taken to the hospital for chest x-rays — and then came back and went back in. A Willis Reed moment.

Carolina's side: Bryce Young 23-of-41 for 209, a touchdown and a pick. Chuba Hubbard went over — 22 carries, 81 yards, a touchdown, plus seven catches for 38 yards. Tetairoa McMillan led the receivers with six for 57. Late Panthers score created some drama; they went for two down 14, didn't get it.

🏈 NINE PLAYOFF TEAMS, SEVEN SPOTS

Scott saw this from Will Hill of VSiN and it's the best question in football right now.

NFC North — all four could make itNFC West — three legit
VikingsUndefeated — the last one left49ers
Bears5-2Seahawks
Lions4-2Rams3-4
Packers5-3 — and in last place

Plus a South champion (Atlanta can be in first by Sunday night) and an East champion (the Giants at 4-2-1 currently lead it).

That's nine teams for seven spots.

Scott: "If I told you all four of those North teams were in the playoffs, you wouldn't bat an eye. The Packers are in last place and they're 5-3. Some people would argue the Vikings are the worst of the bunch. Not me — you guys know how high I am on the Vikings this year and that defense."

"Is it crazy to say the Rams are getting left out? I think they go on a run. But then if we take three teams from the West, are we knocking out two teams from the North? Are the Packers not getting in? Are the Lions? Are the Bears?"

Keep this one in your pocket. Division-winner and conference-record tiebreakers are going to decide a playoff field where four teams that would all be favored in a wild-card game are competing for two spots. That's where futures and win-total markets get mispriced — the market tends to price each team's odds independently and ignore that they're fighting each other for a fixed number of chairs.

🐻 THE BEARS GO ALL IN: JEFFERY SIMMONS

Chicago acquired the All-Pro defensive tackle from Tennessee for multiple first-round picks — making him the first defensive tackle in the common era traded for more than one first-rounder.

Did they give up a lot? Yes. Here's what they got. Among all NFL defensive tackles from 2019 to now, per ESPN:

CategorySimmons' rank
Forced fumbles1st
Sacks2nd
Fumble recoveries2nd
Pass breakups2nd
Disrupted dropbacks2nd
Tackles3rd

Scott: "The Titans are trying to rebuild and get draft picks. But you have the Bears that are going for it this year. The dude is an absolute beast."

And note what this does to the section above: Chicago just got meaningfully better in a division where four teams are fighting for playoff spots.

🔥 THE HOUSE SPLIT: CHIEFS AT BRONCOS

The line is down to about 1.5. Bearman made the Chiefs case on Wednesday. On the Football Show, AJ Hoffman and Scott took opposite sides, and this one is worth reading in full because both arguments are good.

AJ: "You can't convince me Denver is good"

AJ Hoffman: "Bo Nix stinks. Nobody wants to say it because he wins football games. I feel like there are a lot of people who now realize that Jalen Hurts was never really good — he just played on a team where he does everything they ask him to do, which is enough, but it doesn't mean he's a good quarterback. Bo Nix is exactly that. He can't throw the ball downfield."

"They covered last week because he had a random fifty-something-yard run that'll never happen again. And now he's playing against a Kansas City Chiefs defense that is probably pissed off."

His honest caveat: "You may be right about Kansas City, because Kansas City's so banged up offensively. Who knows what they're gonna look like out there?"

Scott: "I wouldn't be surprised if Denver wins outright"

And his case is about the spot, not the team:

Scott: "Kansas City got exposed by Seattle. Now you have to come from a grueling physical game where you got beaten physically, emotionally and spiritually against the Seahawks. And now you've got to travel and go to elevation and take on the Denver Broncos defense. It's going to be just as physical. It just feels like a terrible spot to back Kansas City here."

He granted the divisional discount — they play there every year, so it mitigates some of the home-field edge — and he granted the Nix criticism: "Yes, Bo Nix did have a screen pass that went for fifty-something yards. So his aDOT is still incredibly low. And yes, he did run for a very long run — he hit 19 miles per hour on that run, by the way."

But: "With Sean Payton taking back play-calling responsibilities the past couple of weeks, the Broncos have won a couple in a row. The defense is still the Broncos defense."

Who have the Chiefs actually beaten?

Scott ran the résumé and it's damning:

Chiefs winThe asterisk
Broncos (Week 1)Both quarterbacks coming back from injury, and it was Davis Webb's first week calling plays for Denver
ColtsWe all know about the Colts
DolphinsWe all know about the Dolphins
RaidersThey backdoor-covered
Chargers
Loss: Seahawks

Scott: "They have not played anybody. And their best win is that Denver win — a game where Denver missed a million tackles, which is very un-Denver-like."

Plus the angle he likes most: divisional revenge. Denver lost in Week 1 and gets them back at home.

AJ's resolution — and the framework worth stealing

AJ: "It's a one-and-a-half-point line. I could easily see either one of these teams winning outright. They're basically telling us this is about a pick. But I trust Andy Reid. Andy Reid off a loss, I'm pretty much always going to be interested in. Patrick Mahomes off a loss, I'm going to be interested in."

⭐ "I want to buy Kansas City low when I can. I sold Kansas City high last week. This feels like I'm buying them low."

That's the cleanest statement of the Chiefs thesis we've had. It isn't a claim that Kansas City is good right now — it's a claim that the market overreacts in both directions on this specific franchise, and the move is to be a seller after the wins and a buyer after the losses.

On the teasers: Scott's two Wong teaser legs (Jacksonville and Denver) both got support. AJ: "You're probably good on both teaser pieces, but I certainly prefer the Atlanta one." Fezzik: "I like both, but I'm a Wong teaser guy."

🏔️ COLLEGE FOOTBALL: THE HOLY WAR SANDWICH

Both participants in next week's Utah–BYU top-10 game — scheduled by Fox for 10 a.m. Pacific, which everyone agrees is a joke — have a trap in front of them this Saturday.

BYU −16.5 vs. Arizona State

Scott's case for the fade: "BYU is coming off back-to-back grueling, emotional, physical games that came down to the wire — the Notre Dame game with a second left, and the double-overtime game at Central Florida on a sloppy, wet field. And now you travel back cross-country to take on Arizona State the week before the Holy War. Why is this not the sandwich spot of the century?"

He answered himself: "I'll tell you why. Because we're waiting for the plus 17 instead of the plus 16 and a half."

⭐ THE DATABASE PULL: BYU THE WEEK BEFORE UTAH

BYU as a home favorite, week before playing Utah
Straight up8-2
ATS5-5
(back to the early 2000s)

So the look-ahead is real, but it shows up as a non-cover, not a loss. They win and they don't cover: last year they beat Arizona 33-27 as a 2.5-point favorite — a cover, but close. In 2021 against Arizona they won and failed to cover as a 13.5-point favorite.

The counterargument, and it's strong — Fezzik on fading BYU at home:

⭐ "Literally, you've got to be an idiot to fade BYU at home. If you've been the road team in a BYU game — unless it's Utah, unless it's another mountainous team — they are so strong in terms of home field advantage. I've got to have a perfect reason to want to fade them at home."

AJ's version: "Arizona State has played two road games this year. Lost by 28 at Texas A&M. Lost by 28 at Texas Tech. They've not been on the road other than that, and those are teams with pretty good home-field advantages, and they both beat the snot out of Arizona State. This team has not traveled well. I don't expect them to start traveling well here. And BYU is on the bubble of the college football playoff — they can't overlook anything."

Also noted: Arizona State's satisfying win last week came against a backup quarterback.

Utah −6.5 at Cincinnati

Look-ahead for Utah, letdown question for Cincinnati — and Fezzik destroyed the letdown premise.

Scott: "Isn't this the letdown we talk about, where you upset a ranked team as a double-digit dog? They beat Texas Tech in the Brendan Sorsby revenge game. Can Cincinnati get up again?"

⭐ Fezzik: "Hell yeah. It's even MORE of a climax. You're a chess player and you just beat a master — and now you get to play an expert, another guy rated higher than you. I just beat someone better than this. And I'm a six-and-a-half-point underdog, no respect. I'm gonna get more kids in the stands. The program is in a frenzy. Heck, I can even make the college football playoffs. This is not a letdown. They're not playing against Marshall here. This is a huge game."

AJ relocated the letdown spot: "Cincinnati's got at Houston on deck after Utah. So if there's a letdown spot, it'd be that one — going on the road and facing their third consecutive ranked team."

And his read on Utah away from home: "Before the Houston game, remember they were on the ropes against Colorado — and Colorado has basically quit on the season, that's not even a real football team. Going on the road away from home, Utah loses their superpowers. Suddenly they're just a normal team."

Both are waiting: "I'm not getting involved unless I see a seven pop. I wouldn't be surprised on game day if we do see sevens pop." You can get 6.5 at −115 now.

⚠️ FEZZIK'S ASYMMETRIC RISK RULE, STATED IN FULL

This came out of the Utah discussion and it's the single most portable thing in the episode.

⭐ "A good rule to live by is: until they're about to kick off, and we're one minute from kickoff — you never bet a plus 2.5. You never bet a plus 6.5, plus 9.5, plus 13.5, plus 16.5, plus 20.5."

The logic: those are all a half-point below a key number. If the line moves against you by a half point, it costs you almost nothing. If it moves your way, you get a key number. The downside and upside are not symmetric, so you wait.

And then he told on himself, which is why it lands:

Fezzik: "I can't tell you how many times I have broken my own rule and bet a plus 2.5, because I say to myself: there is no way, no way this line could possibly get to plus 3. And then I wake up on Sunday. A good example — there is no way the dummies could bet BYU up to seven and a half against UCF. No way. So I'll take UCF plus six and a half. And then what's this? You wake up and it's seven and a half. I was so mad. I couldn't believe it."

🏈 MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL

#3 Georgia −12/−12.5 vs. #17 Florida — Georgia rolls

The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party moves indoors to Mercedes-Benz Stadium because of the Jacksonville construction. Next year: Orlando.

Scott: "I don't think I can treat this like a neutral. I have to treat it like a home game for Georgia. Florida is an interesting team because at times they look like one of the best teams in the country, and at times they look like a team that shouldn't be in the top 25. It's a big number to lay on a neutral — but I don't think this is a neutral."

Fezzik's power rating is well above the market: "We made Georgia way, way higher. We consider the Georgia loss to Auburn to be a complete aberration — Georgia outplayed Auburn handily."

And the transitive check: Florida caught a similar number against Texas and pulled the upset. Fezzik: "Georgia's way better than Texas. Georgia's gonna roll in this game." AJ agrees.

Ohio State −6.5 at USC — the only side is the dog

Ohio State travels cross-country without Julian Sayin, starting a backup.

AJ: "I don't think I can back Ohio State laying almost a touchdown on the road with a quarterback I don't know anything about. Because what I do know is USC will score. USC can't really run it — but against Ohio State you probably weren't going to run it anyway, so they're going to chuck the ball around and put up some points. Can Ohio State keep up on the road in the first start for a new quarterback? It's hard for me to imagine that. Like we said about Utah, I'll wait for a seven — but the only way I'd look here is to the dog."

#13 Texas Tech −3.5 vs. #22 Arizona — a genuine pass

AJ: "I'm actually starting to get interested in Arizona. I don't like this Texas Tech team, but with them losing last week it kind of changed everything. I don't think we're paying a tax on Texas Tech anymore. I think the line here is pretty spot on, to be honest."

Worth noting: Bearman was leaning Arizona on Wednesday and said he'd decide Friday. AJ has independently arrived at "the line is fair." Two of our guys looked at the same game and both found the price honest — that's usually a sign to go elsewhere.

📊 THE MODEL LOPSIDED PLAYS — 7-2 ON THE YEAR

3-0 last week. Here's a teaser (more coming in tomorrow mornings newsletter)

1. North Dakota State −24 vs. UTEP (Fargodome)

The edges:

NDSU, points per opportunity allowed on defense2nd in the country
UTEP, finishing drives inside the 40138th in the country

UTEP is 1-6, 0-3 in conference. Their road season: lost 61-7 at New Mexico, 52-17 at Michigan, 51-0 at Oklahoma. They're coming off a close home loss to San Jose State, 24-11.

Scott: "I don't see how UTEP scores any points here."

AJ says stay away, and the reason is good: "It felt like North Dakota State had the air let out of their balloon last week. They were in the discussion as a potential G6 tournament team, and losing at New Mexico ended that discussion. Two losses now, so it's not going to happen. So maybe there's a letdown spot."

But he can't take UTEP either: "UTEP is so bad. I've tried to play UTEP in some spots and it's impossible — they are dreadful, especially on the road. They let Michigan score 52 on them. I don't think Michigan has scored 52 points total the rest of the season combined. They let Oklahoma score 51, and I'm pretty sure Oklahoma hadn't scored 50 combined."

His landing spot: "I lean your way, but I think the letdown is real. You could see them winning by 20, winning comfortably — and not covering a huge number."

⭐ The resolution: UTEP team total UNDER

Scott's suggestion, and it's the right one. If you believe UTEP can't score but you're not sure NDSU is motivated enough to cover 24, the team total under isolates the half of the thesis everybody agrees on. That's how to bet a game where your own guys disagree about the spread.
