College Football is back! Eight FBS games on Saturday. These numbers have been on the board for months. Everyone who bets for a living has had a look. That's the whole reason I care where I got in versus where it's trading now — on a board this scrutinized, the entry price is the play. Two below, with my exit numbers attached.
San Jose State at USC

Still On The Over — And I'll Pay Up To 61
I wrote this up in July with the total at 58.5 and fired. It's 60.5 now — I'm two points below where this thing is trading before a snap has been played, and that's the part that actually pays me. So the question isn't whether 58.5 was too low. It's whether 60.5 is still a bet.
Yes. To 61, not a half-point higher.
The market gave San Jose State none of the move
Take the number apart. A 60.5 total with USC laying 38.5 implies USC 49.5, San Jose State 11. The opener — 57.5 with USC −35.5 — implied USC 46.5, San Jose State 11.
Same eleven. Both times. Every point of that three-point move went onto USC's side of the ledger. And San Jose State's side is the half I'm actually betting.
What USC does in these spots
Lincoln Riley doesn't schedule a Week 0 body-bag game to win it 24–13. Every tune-up of his four seasons, with the final game total:

Six of seven cleared 60.5. The median is 80.
Jayden Maiava is back off a 3,711-yard, 24-touchdown season in which he led the nation in QBR at 91.2, running an offense that put up 36.5 points a game. Across from him: a defense that gave up 32.5 a night last season, one of the worst in FBS, torn down and rebuilt — first live rep of a new system, in the Coliseum, under a noon Pacific sun. USC's 49.5 is not the risk here.
Why San Jose State still scores
The under case is Utah State, 48–0 in 2024. But Utah State wanted the clock to run. Under Ken Niumatalolo the Spartans run Craig Stutzmann's run and shoot — pass-first, tempo, forty-plus throws a night, a system that has produced back-to-back national receiving leaders. It doesn't shorten a game, it lengthens one, and it keeps throwing when it's down four scores because that's all it knows.
That's how you get backdoor points on USC's second string. Last meeting: 28 points in a 56–28 game that sailed over.
And July's quarterback question is answered. Luke Weaver, a JUCO All-American who went 2–0 starting at Hawaii and threw the winning touchdown in the Hawai'i Bowl, won the job on Aug. 19.
Why to hesitate
QB Walker Eget (Duke) and WR Danny Scudero (Colorado) are gone — the two men who produced those numbers. San Jose State scored under 20 in each of its last four games (16, 10, 3, 14) and averaged 21.4 for the year on the way to 3–9. Weaver's FBS body of work is five games and 628 yards at 6.0 per attempt; there is not much there yet.
And the closest comp is ugly: at Texas last September, a 36.5-point dog with a total of 52.5, final 38–7 — 45 points, well under, with Eget still throwing to Scudero.
Then there's the other side of the ledger. USC's defense is now run by Gary Patterson, the winningest coach in TCU history and a 2026 Hall of Fame inductee, hired in January specifically because Riley's defenses kept costing him games. If Patterson's group is what USC paid for, the Spartans' eleven gets harder to reach, not easier.
The number
San Jose State at USC — Over 60.5. I'll bet it to 61.
I'm in at 58.5 and that's the ticket I love. At 60.5 it's a smaller play, and I'd rather say so than pretend the number didn't move. At 61.5 I'm out.
If your book posts it, San Jose State team total over 11.5 is the purer version — you buy only the half you disagree with. The USC team total I liked at 47.5 in July now implies 49.5, so that value is gone.
Hawaii at Stanford
Saturday, Aug. 29 · 7:00 p.m. ET · ACC Network · Stanford Stadium (Stanford −3.5, O/U 48.5)
The Market
The total opened at 50.5 in June and has gone one direction since. It's 48.5 across the market now.
Why Under
Stanford scored 18.8 points per game last year — 117th in FBS — and now runs a brand-new install under first-time head coach Tavita Pritchard, with Davis Warren making his first live start since 2024 after knee surgery cost him all of last season. Four returning offensive linemen and a telegraphed power-run identity mean long drives and a moving clock.
The same matchup went under by 7.5 in Honolulu last year, and Hawaii arrives on the mainland this time without its best receiver. Pofele Ashlock — the reigning Hawai'i Bowl MVP — hasn't practiced in contact since camp opened July 29, and his position coach has said there's no timetable. Weather is a non-factor.
Why To Hesitate
This is the part the number is daring you to ignore: Hawaii averaged 30 points a game last season on the way to nine wins. Micah Alejado finished eighth nationally in passing yards per game (282.4) and second in FBS in completions per game, and he's the Mountain West's Preseason Player of the Year. He did all of it on a fractured right fibula he suffered in this exact game last August — and he's healthy now for the first time in eleven months.
Across from him: a Stanford secondary that finished dead last in the country in pass defense at 289 yards allowed per game. The pace argument cuts thinner than it looks, too. Hawaii sits 73rd in seconds per play, which is the middle of the sport, not the bottom of it — and a team that finished second nationally in completions is not a team that shortens games.
So the under is a bet on two things: that a hobbled Hawaii offense scoring 23 last year is the ceiling rather than the floor, and that Stanford's new install doesn't put points on the worst pass defense's replacement. That's a real bet. It is not a free one.
The Bet
Under 48.5. If you can still grab a rogue 49, do it.
