Week 1 Card: Five Games, Six Plays, Strongest First

Week 0 went 1-1. I had Hawai'i-Stanford under 48.5 and it went 64 — my read was that Stanford's power-run install would shorten the game, and instead Micah Ford ran for three touchdowns and 34 points were scored in the 4th quarter. Wrong about the mechanism, not just the result. Two of the four below are unders and one is on Hawai'i again. Know that going in.

1. UNLV at Hawai'i

Sat · 10:00p ET · Ching Complex

Hawai'i +3 — −105, DraftKings Under 56.5 — −112, BetRivers

UNLV center Austin Boyd is out. After he left the Memphis loss in the fourth quarter, Memphis went straight at Jackson Arnold — four sacks and a fumbled snap the rest of the way. Arnold isn't the problem (291 yards, two TDs, 54 rushing), and that's exactly the issue: mobile quarterbacks behind a shuffled interior hold the ball and eat sacks instead of throwing it away. Sacks kill drives and drain clock. That serves the under and the Hawai'i side at once.

Wind matters too — ENE 16 mph, gusts to 22, on a 4 p.m. local kick. Not a howler, but past the 15-mph line where passing offenses change, and both of these teams live in the air. Alejado threw 50 times at Stanford for 269 yards, 5.4 an attempt, in dead-calm conditions.

On the 64-point opener everyone will cite: that game sat at 30 through three quarters, then produced 34 in the fourth, capped by a defensive touchdown. A fumble return says nothing repeatable about either offense.

Risk: Three points already gone from the total (58.5 → 55.5), and the markets disagree — the total moved toward me, the spread moved away (+2.5 → +3). Hawaii WR Ashlock (76-827 last year) is questionable.

Exit: don't play the under below 55.5. DK and BetMGM are already at 55.5.

Note: both legs need a low-scoring Hawai'i win, roughly 27-24. Correlated. Size as two positions, not one bet.

2. VMI at Virginia Tech

Sat · 7:30p ET · ACC Network · Lane Stadium

Virginia Tech −55.5 — −110, FanDuel

A bet on James Franklin's fourth quarter, on the record rather than reputation. Asked in 2024 about running up a 44-7 win over Maryland, he said his threes and fours "deserve to play football," then volunteered that point differential matters. His 2025 non-conference slate finished 132-17.

Now put him in a home debut, sold-out Lane Stadium, against a 1-11 team installing a new triple option that managed 11 passing yards on nine attempts in its opener. First-year triple options turn it over at the mesh point, and turnovers against a roster this thin mean short fields. Tech's staff has months of prep plus a full game of film.

Risk: Same man. Franklin was fired Oct. 12 last year, and the two losses that ended him were as a 24.5-point favorite to UCLA and a 21.5-point favorite to Northwestern. I think that was a roster and a locker room issue, not a philosophy — but if you think he goes flat when favored, pass. With the total at 62.5, this implies Tech 59, VMI 3.5. No margin for a slow first quarter.

Exit: pass at −57.5.

3. Lafayette at UConn

Sat · 12:00p ET · Rentschler Field

UConn −19.5 — −110, FanDuel

Every preview leads with UConn's 87 new faces, 60 of them transfers, after Jim Mora left for Colorado State. Read backwards. Jason Candle came from Toledo and 22 Rockets followed — including K'Von Sherman, first-team All-MAC, 94 tackles and 14.5 TFL, and RB Kenji Christian. That's a transplanted core that has already played together in this system. Week 1 chaos is priced into a number like this. Continuity isn't.

Lafayette went 8-4 and is no tomato can, but there's tape: their opener at Georgetown got a half in before lightning ended it, and they trailed 13-7 to a 6-6 team.

Risk: the total collapsed 57.5 → 51.5 while the spread never moved. Fewer points makes 20 harder, and that money may know something.

Exit: pass at −21.5.

4. Clemson at LSU

Sat · 7:30p ET · ABC · Tiger Stadium · (LSU −10, O/U 50.5)

Under 50.5 — −110, BetMGM or BetRivers · SMALLER WAGER

My totals have been falling. This one is the same 50.5 it was in early August, so I'm not paying for a move that already happened. Don't take −115 at FanDuel.

Clemson's offense is where the under lives. Christopher Vizzina has one career start — 29-of-42, 317 yards, three TDs, no picks vs. SMU. Real, and also the entire sample. It wasn't in Death Valley at night, he's running Chad Morris's new offense, true freshman Tait Reynolds is expected to play, and Swinney wouldn't guarantee the job past Week 1.

LSU has its own problem: Sam Leavitt throwing to an almost entirely new receiving corps in their first game together, against a Clemson defense with a potential first-rounder at every level — Heldt, Brown and Hampton all made ESPN's preseason top 100.

Risk: Lane Kiffin. His 2025 Ole Miss offense led the SEC in total yards and passing, third nationally at 37.3 per game, and Charlie Weis Jr. came with him. LSU's implied total is 30.

Exit: smaller than a unit. Don't chase below 49.5.
